Pakistan ranks lowest in South Asia for 2026 Hunger Index
Pakistan is facing a severe food security crisis, ranking the worst in the Global Hunger Index 2026 for South Asia. This situation is driven by economic disruptions, rising food prices, and climate impacts such as floods and droughts. Economic instability and soaring inflation have reduced households' purchasing power and increased rates of malnutrition and wasting among children, with the situation deteriorating since 2018. Crop yields have also been affected by climate changes, including heavy rains and floods, further exacerbating the crisis. Estimates indicate that 218 million people in South Asia suffer from malnutrition, with the Hunger Index rising significantly. Additionally, the crisis is linked to conflicts and international disputes, such as the wars in Iran and Ukraine, which drive up global food prices.
