Mauritania Debates Outsider Bloggers Detention

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mauritania clarified that the country's law allows for the suspension of suspects' access to their lawyers during the period of investigative detention, particularly in cases related to national security and terrorism, upon justified request from the judicial police officer. The aim is to ensure that investigations proceed effectively while safeguarding the rights of the detainees, as constitutional guarantees remain in effect, and the Public Prosecutor's Office monitors procedures from detention to the referral of suspects. However, bloggers and families of defendants believe that security campaigns target political opponents, and that arrests are accompanied by torture and a lack of transparency, despite authorities affirming their commitment to respecting detainees' rights.
