Kenyan sect leader convicted of killing 191 followers

Kenyan courts have convicted religious leader Paul Makenzie on all charges brought against him, following his funeral which turned into a trial for mass killings and crimes against humanity. He was sentenced for inciting his followers to starve themselves to death in order to realize his religious vision, resulting in the death of 191 people, most of whom were children. The bodies of the victims have been piling up in the Shakahola forest camps since 2023, with over 400 bodies recovered so far. Many victims died under harsh conditions, as investigations continue into additional cases. Makenzie had previously been arrested twice on charges related to extremism and homicide before today’s conviction. It is hoped that this judgment will serve as a deterrent to prevent the recurrence of such crimes.
