Gaza Faces Food Crisis Amid Reduced Aid

The World Food Programme has reported that its food assistance in Gaza has been reduced by nearly one-third due to lack of funding. This cut threatens to deplete food stocks and increases the risk of hunger spreading among the population, especially amid worsening living conditions and declining purchasing power caused by unemployment rates soaring to 80%. The reduction has led to a decrease in the number of beneficiaries from 1.6 million to about 1.1 million people, and a drop in daily meals from 250,000 to 150,000, exacerbating the food security crisis and exposing hundreds of thousands to severe hunger and poverty—particularly as the Israeli blockade continues, preventing the entry of essential supplies and medical materials. The sector has warned of a worsening malnutrition crisis, especially among children and pregnant women, with projections indicating that around 74,000 children will require treatment for malnutrition by April 2027. International calls for urgent funding and the opening of crossings have been made to prevent a looming humanitarian catastrophe.
