Libyan Parliament OKs Turkey Maritime Deal

The Libyan House of Representatives approved the memorandum of understanding signed with Turkey in 2019 regarding the delimitation of maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea. This includes drawing a maritime boundary that permits exploration for energy resources and natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. The council also repealed two previous decisions that rejected the agreement and rejected relations with Turkey, amid efforts by Libyan and Turkish parties to activate and expand maritime cooperation. However, the agreement faces regional and international opposition, most notably from Greece and Egypt, due to overlapping maritime boundaries with geographical and legal claims in the area.
