Egypt advances urban growth despite criticism

The article discusses Egyptian Prime Minister Mostapha Madbouly's justification for the country's move toward urban expansion through the development of new cities to accommodate the country's rapidly growing population, which has exceeded 110 million people. It is noted that the government aims to establish 39 new cities by 2050, compared to the current 27. Madbouly pointed out that these cities, such as the New Administrative Capital, have become centers of administration and residence. He explained that these projects contribute to creating job opportunities and invigorating the economy, despite criticisms regarding their costs and what some perceive as haphazard planning. He emphasized that the new cities, which currently house around 14-15 million people, are essential for accommodating population growth. He also stated that government investment in these urban developments enhances infrastructure and supports future economic development.
