UN urges probe into India protest crackdown

United Nations experts called for an independent investigation into the Indian authorities' crackdown on recent protests demanding the resignation of Election Commissioner Jinesh Kumar, due to a voter list amendment believed to favor the Bharatiya Janata Party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reports included the use of security forces’ force against protesters, including baton attacks, and the prevention of thousands from participating in peaceful demonstrations. There were calls to halt excessive use of force, lift the ban on gatherings, and prevent digital surveillance from being misused. Additionally, leaders of the "Cockroach Party" movement remain in custody and face charges of attempting to disturb public peace. Protests have spread to major cities across the country, while Indian authorities have defended their actions, describing the criticism as an intrusion into internal affairs.
