Egypt Signs Contracts for 5 Wheat Shipments
Egypt has witnessed the return of the Egypt Forward device, the government buyer of strategic goods, to the global wheat market after months of suspension, through contracting for approximately five shipments of wheat during this week. The quantities, sources of shipment, and expected arrival dates have not been disclosed, reflecting the importance of timing amid ongoing efforts to secure grain supplies to support the subsidized bread system. This move comes after a season that saw a record-high purchase of local wheat, which reached about 4.6 million tons until June 2026, reducing the need for large imports, which typically amount to around 10 million tons annually. The global wheat market is currently facing geographical disruptions and shipping challenges, making the timing of these deals and the sources of supply particularly significant for Egypt, the world's largest wheat importer.
