Emirati strike hits Al-Shabaab in Somalia

The United Arab Emirates carried out a drone strike in northern Somalia for the first time since November 2025, targeting Al-Shabaab fighters in the Galgala mountain corridor. The operation came after Al-Shabaab had attacked Puntland forces with improvised explosive devices, with the drones—launched from Bosaso Airport—injuring two fighters, who were later killed by local forces. This strike occurs amid deteriorating relations between the UAE and the central Somali government, amidst escalating political tensions in the country and ongoing challenges in the fight against Al-Shabaab, which still controls large areas and is rebuilding its positions after previous losses.
