Egypt rejects Turkey-Libya maritime deal

Egypt has fully rejected the memorandum of understanding signed between Libya and Turkey regarding maritime border delimitation, which the Libyan House of Representatives in eastern Libya has endorsed. Egypt considers that the agreement holds no legal effects on Egypt. This statement was made during a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Istanbul, where Shoukry emphasized the necessity of respecting the principles of international maritime law and the United Nations Convention of 1982, while reaffirming Egypt's support for the unity and territorial integrity of Libya and its stability. Fidan expressed understanding of Egypt’s concerns and called for continued consultations and coordination to address Libya’s situation. Meanwhile, this agreement stirs regional disputes over sovereignty and exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean, contributing to rising tensions between Greece and Cyprus on one side, and Turkey and Libya on the other.
