Disagreements Emerge Over Maritime Memorandum

The article discussed the Egyptian-Turkish consultations that took place on Friday regarding regional tensions, particularly disagreements over the maritime memorandum of understanding signed between Libya and Turkey in 2019, which the Libyan Parliament recently ratified and Egypt rejected. Turkey expressed its desire to continue consultations with Egypt in order to contain the dispute, while Egypt emphasized its rejection of Libya’s ratification of the agreement, considering it invalid and harmful to Egyptian interests according to international law. The article also noted that the Libyan House of Representatives approved the agreement, which provoked a rejection from Egypt. Despite this, communication and negotiations between the two countries continue, within a framework of efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and expanding cooperation, despite the current disagreements over maritime rights and international understandings.
