UN seeks $202M to avert environmental crisis

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), both United Nations agencies, have called for a funding of $202 million to protect 8.8 million people across 22 high-risk countries from the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon expected to cause droughts, floods, and storms during the second half of 2026. The phenomenon, which has started to develop, is anticipated to escalate to a "super El Niño" level by 2027, increasing the likelihood of widespread natural disasters. These funds will enable the expansion and enhancement of humanitarian support to assist those affected and improve their capacity to face climate changes.
