Ebola Deaths Reach 1,487 in DRC

The authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have announced that the confirmed cases of Ebola amount to 3,360, with 1,487 deaths. There are concerns that the actual spread is much wider than the official figures due to challenges in monitoring all cases, especially in vulnerable regions. The current outbreak, which began in mid-May, is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has a fatality rate of approximately 40%. This is a highly dangerous disease, with mortality rates ranging from 25% to 90% depending on the strain and the speed of response. The authorities, supported by the World Health Organization, continue efforts to trace contacts and carry out vaccination campaigns, particularly in the eastern regions facing security challenges, to control the spread. This is the thirteenth outbreak of the virus since its discovery in 1976, amidst ongoing challenges related to the rare strains and the limited availability of effective vaccines against them.
