Security Council to review UN leadership candidates

The United Nations Security Council will hold an informal exploratory session tomorrow, Thursday, to gauge the level of support among its members for the seven candidates competing to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, succeeding António Guterres. The promotion of these candidates—who come from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Senegal, and Uganda—involves secret ballots among the 15 council members, with each member assessing their support for each candidate. So far, there is no clear frontrunner in the race, and it is expected that the unbinding voting rounds will continue throughout the summer, often concluding in late September or early October. This process is lengthy and relies heavily on consensus among the members.
