Spanish alerts on migrant surge from Morocco
The number of illegal migrant crossings from Morocco to the Spanish city of Ceuta is increasing, surpassing the levels observed during the crisis in May 2021. Over the past week, the city hosted about a thousand migrants, with hundreds arriving through unauthorized methods such as swimming or rescue operations at sea. The capacity of the temporary residence center (CETI) has been exceeded, as it currently accommodates more than 800 people, with more awaiting entry. Security efforts have been intensified, involving drone surveillance and rescue operations, due to the ongoing flow. The situation has been described as a security emergency, with calls to tighten border controls and close the Ceuta crossing. Meanwhile, some Spanish parties have accused others of using migration as a political tool by Morocco against Madrid and Europe.
