Wales reaffirms opposition to Infantino for FIFA
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing declining support from several national associations, as the Welsh Football Association announced the withdrawal of its backing for his re-election bid for the term starting in 2027 and ending in 2031. This is due to a loss of trust in his leadership, following failures in governance and stakeholder management. The European Union (UEFA) and the North American and Caribbean football federation (CONCACAF) also expressed their loss of confidence, after Infantino canceled a plan to sell parts of the commercial rights for the World Cup to private investors. This move raised questions about his future and the possibility that more associations might oppose his re-election. This escalation represents a significant challenge to Infantino’s authority ahead of the upcoming FIFA Council elections in March.
