Omdia Report: Algiers Outpaces Berlin and Istanbul in Internet Speed
The international Omdia report ranks Algiers as the top city in Africa and the 34th worldwide on the "Gigacity Index 2026," which measures the performance of fixed broadband networks in 50 major cities. The city's inclusion in the silver category reflects its progress in fiber optic coverage reaching homes, now at 100%. Internet speeds in Algiers exceed 500 Mbps for 7% of households, and performance peaks at 90% of users experiencing speeds over 100 Mbps with good latency. Algeria's strong ranking results from significant investments in telecommunications infrastructure and its rapid expansion of fiber optic technology, enabling it to surpass other African and global cities and achieve a high classification that highlights its technological development.
