Toilet humor highlights ongoing fat phobia
During a cyclospora outbreak in the United States, some social media users have made disturbing jokes about contracting the parasitic infection for weight loss, despite its symptoms of nausea and diarrhea that can require hospitalization. Experts warn that such humor normalizes unhealthy dieting behaviors and perpetuates harmful diet culture, especially for those recovering from or vulnerable to eating disorders. These comments contribute to unrealistic ideals of thinness and can trigger severe health risks, including behaviors similar to those seen in disordered eating.
