Italy's shift from healthy eating to child obesity
The article discusses the rising issue of childhood obesity in Italy, particularly in the southern regions, where over 40% of young children are overweight. Despite Italy's historical reputation for the Mediterranean diet, modern dietary habits have shifted toward ultra-processed foods, leading to health concerns. Medical professionals highlight the increasing prevalence of severe obesity among teenagers, with surgeries and weight-loss interventions becoming more common, though some cases remain ineligible due to health risks. Efforts to address the problem include school-based programs and regional initiatives, but cultural and social factors hinder progress.
