US bases delay toxic chemical cleanup
Hundreds of U.S. military bases have delayed the cleanup of toxic PFAS chemicals for years, with some deadlines pushed back by decades or removed altogether. These delays, emerging from military records analyzed by USA TODAY, often relate to ongoing investigation phases before final remediation can begin, particularly at sites with proven contamination affecting local water sources. Communities near these sites, including private well owners, face ongoing health risks as the military's timeline extensions hinder timely environmental remediation and transparency.
