Florida reports first flesh-eating bacteria death
Health officials in Florida have reported the state's first flesh-eating bacteria death of 2026 in Palm Beach County, linked to Vibrio vulnificus, a deadly bacteria naturally found in warm saltwater. So far this year, there have been 11 confirmed cases, with one death, following increased cases due to recent hurricanes. The bacteria pose a risk mainly after storms when floodwaters and standing water create opportunities for exposure, especially for people with weakened immune systems or open wounds. Prompt medical treatment is critical, as infections can rapidly become severe or fatal.
