Newsom intervened to block parent-led school reforms
Gavin Newsom and his allies used a backdoor budget bill to shift control of California’s Department of Education from an independently elected superintendent to an appointee loyal to the governor, despite voters rejecting similar moves multiple times. This power grab aims to centralize influence over education policies amid public dissatisfaction with the system’s performance and controversial curriculum issues. Critics argue the move undermines transparency, accountability, and parental input in education governance.
