Mass. Guardian Shortage Delay
Massachusetts has delayed implementing a system of professional legal guardians for individuals unable to make medical decisions, despite a law passed two years ago requiring a report from state health officials. The delay has resulted in hospital patients who need guardianship remaining in hospitals longer, contributing to overcrowding and increased costs, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people in need of guardianship. The state has yet to release its recommendations, which are crucial for addressing systemic gaps and improving discharge processes for vulnerable patients.
