Tech AI centers threaten climate goals
Data center developers in the United States are increasingly building bespoke natural-gas power plants to meet rising energy demands, which could significantly increase carbon emissions. Bloomberg estimates that 99 planned plants could emit about 318 million metric tons of CO2 annually, representing up to a third of the US power sector's total emissions last year. Major tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft are involved in projects that could produce millions of tons of carbon emissions, potentially undermining their climate commitments despite previous pledges to reduce their environmental impact.
