Secret 20,000-mile solar supply chain bypasses tariffs
President Trump has introduced new tariffs and import restrictions aimed at protecting the U.S. solar industry from circumvented Chinese-produced panels. A complex global trade route involving Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia, and China has emerged, allowing companies to obscure the origin of solar panels and bypass tariffs through intermediate exports. U.S. authorities intend to clamp down on such practices with measures including minimum import prices and a 15% tariff starting in December. Despite efforts to limit circumvention, companies are likely to seek long-term growth in overseas markets amid ongoing overcapacity and demand for solar energy globally.
