California updates rules for replacement tires
California has approved new regulations requiring replacement tires to meet energy-efficiency standards based on their rolling resistance, aiming to reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. The rules, set to begin in 2029 and tighten in 2033, could eliminate up to 70% of tires available in the state by 2033, potentially increasing costs for consumers and challenging manufacturers. Environmental groups support the measures, while tire makers express concerns about higher prices and market impacts.
