The article highlights Dolly Parton’s decision to record Woody Guthrie’s protest song “Deportee” in 1980, emphasizing its message about immigrant dignity and the dehumanization of Mexican workers killed in a 1948 plane crash. Her rendition, which personally names the victims and condemns criminalizing language around immigration, challenged prevailing political narratives and reflected her support for undocumented immigrants at a time of rising hostility. Parton’s broader advocacy of empathy, literacy, and social justice contrasts with recent political rhetoric, and her legacy continues to inspire artists addressing immigration issues today.
