Zoe Kazan's six key choices in East of Eden adaptation
Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s "East of Eden" focuses on exploring the complexities of Cathy Ames, a central antagonist whose character she reinterprets as a young woman shaped by childhood trauma and psychological disassociation. The seven-part Netflix series emphasizes Cathy’s early life, including her sexual assault and feelings of disconnection, and centers her arrival as a critical catalyst for the story, diverging from Kazan’s initial idea to start with her later. The series also highlights key themes such as intergenerational legacy and the concept of "timshel," underscoring moral choice, while depicting relationships within the Trask family and their community.
