ICE detainees sprayed with cleaner settle
Six years after his release from the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, Wilfredo Gonzalez Mena suffers ongoing health issues he attributes to being sprayed with a concentrated disinfectant, HDQ Neutral, used excessively during the COVID-19 pandemic. A proposed settlement in a class-action lawsuit, preliminary approved by a judge, offers compensation to around 2,700 detainees exposed to the pesticide between March and September 2020, acknowledging that the chemical can cause serious health problems including chemical burns and eye damage. The lawsuit alleges that the facility's operator, GEO Group, and the manufacturer, Spartan Chemical, used the pesticide improperly, leading to health risks for detainees, and that GEO Group later stopped using HDQ Neutral following federal violations.
