Carmel-by-the-Sea Gains First Addresses
Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small California coastal town known for its whimsical home names and lack of street addresses, has introduced numbered street addresses for the first time in its 110-year history to improve emergency response and compliance with legal requirements. Residents received final address numbers in September, while still maintaining their post office boxes and unique home nicknames. The change aims to address longstanding issues with mail delivery, package receipt, and emergency services, although it has caused some confusion and resistance among residents concerned about preserving the town’s traditional character.
