Nord Stream trial: German police's Ukraine focus
German authorities are preparing to prosecute Serhii K, a former Ukrainian Special Forces soldier, for allegedly orchestrating the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The explosions destroyed two major gas pipelines, causing significant disruption to Europe's gas supply, and are linked to an attack using explosives planted deep beneath the sea. Investigations suggest Serhii K entered Germany on a forged Ukrainian passport to carry out the operation, which some initially blamed on Russia, but evidence points toward Ukrainian involvement. He will face trial in Hamburg on charges of causing an explosion and war crimes, with further suspects, including a second man fighting extradition from Croatia, also under investigation.
