Amelia Earhart team explores island with large crabs
A new expedition is underway to the island of Nikumaroro in the South Pacific to search for evidence of Amelia Earhart's disappearance in 1937. Researchers from Purdue University and associated institutes aim to locate Earhart's plane, while considering theories that giant coconut crabs may have contributed to her demise by attacking or scavenging her after a crash landing. The team departed in October and is aware of the dangers posed by the large crabs, which are capable of lifting objects and hunting small animals.
