Federal jury selection in Buffalo supermarket attack trial
The article reports on the upcoming federal trial of Payton Gendron, who is accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo that resulted in ten deaths, all Black victims. Gendron faces over two dozen federal hate crime charges and over a dozen firearms charges, with the possibility of the death penalty. The attack, motivated by white supremacy and conspiracy theories, is considered one of the deadliest hate-motivated shootings targeting Black people in U.S. history. Gendron has already pleaded guilty to state murder charges and received a life sentence, but the federal case seeks the death penalty, with the defense aiming to advocate for a sentence of life in prison instead.
