Trump’s flawed political instincts
Many Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections seek to distance themselves from Donald Trump, who remains unpopular. Trump has proposed and announced plans such as taxpayer-funded ads promoting himself and live-streaming the execution of a high-profile criminal, both of which faced overwhelming public opposition and were subsequently abandoned. His recent rallies highlighted controversial ideas, including trade proposals with Canada and Greenland, which polls suggest are widely disapproved of, and he continues to claim the economy is strong despite economic indicators showing decline. Trump's actions appear driven more by impulse and hubris than strategic political considerations.
