Scientists identify cause of Jackie the eagle's death
Jackie, a California bald eagle watched online, died from complications of avian influenza, specifically highly pathogenic H5N1, which was an unexpected diagnosis given her unusual symptoms. Her necropsy revealed severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, and bacterial sepsis, despite the absence of a known outbreak in the area. Experts are unsure how she contracted the virus, as her illness did not show typical signs, and the virus was not circulating widely in Southern California at the time. Her case provided valuable scientific insights into the disease’s varied presentations in wild birds.
