Christian groups received $62M to resettle Somalis in Minnesota
The article discusses the large-scale resettlement of Somali refugees in Minnesota, primarily managed by Catholic Charities and Lutheran Social Services, which has received extensive government funding. Since 1993, these organizations have resettled around 29,000 Somalis, contributing to the state's significant Somali population. The influx is linked to generous welfare programs that have attracted more refugees through chain migration, leading to substantial community growth and economic impacts, including allegations of welfare fraud. Recent federal investigations have targeted Somali community members, and a raid on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home is noted amid ongoing controversy over refugee resettlement policies.
