Parks Canada is ending its 55-year canine search-and-rescue programme in Banff National Park this month, eliminating its sole dog-handler position amid C$145m in budget cuts. The agency says search-and-rescue operations will continue by other means, but the decision has drawn public criticism and a petition to restore the role has attracted more than 5,000 signatures. Conservative MP William Stevenson says the cut could affect public safety and is seeking a meeting with Parks Canada’s chief executive.
