Eerie Deep-Sea Fish Seen

MBARI researchers recorded a rare barreleye fish on October 20, 2026, about 90 kilometers off Monterey, California, at a depth of 600 meters. The team observed it for 20 minutes with the remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts, capturing the institute’s first 4K footage of the species and its 11th recorded sighting. The fish’s transparent head and tubular eyes help it spot prey in the ocean’s twilight zone.
