Bend Hero Teacher Speaks
Cassidy Schutz, a learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, said she wished there had been more time to stop the October 15 shooting, in which a gunman killed three students and a teacher. Police said Schutz threw her phone at the gunman and tackled him before a parent fatally shot him; she later expressed grief for those killed and injured and asked for privacy as she heals. The school remains closed through November 6 for repairs, and the district said 86.2% of families favored returning to Silver Rail.
