Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November; in 2026, it will be observed on Nov. 26. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving for Nov. 26, 1863, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it earlier in 1939 to extend the Christmas shopping season. After some continued to observe the later date, the president and Congress established the fourth Thursday of November as the federal holiday.
