Democrat Scott Colom led Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by fewer than 50 votes in Mississippi’s US Senate race, with 96% counted and about 50,000 ballots still outstanding on Wednesday morning. Mississippi has not elected a Democratic senator in more than 40 years; if Colom wins, he would be the state’s first Black US senator since 1875. The outcome could take time to resolve because the state has no automatic recounts and accepts some mail-in ballots for up to five days after Election Day.
