Nefertiti Walker, a senior vice president for academic affairs in the UMass system, will become interim chancellor of UMass Boston on Feb. 1, President Marty Meehan announced Thursday. She replaces Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, who is stepping down to focus on climate resilience and the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence. Meehan said Walker will help ensure a smooth transition, while information about a national search for a permanent chancellor is expected next spring.
