Anthony Ippolito stars as Sylvester Stallone in Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky,” a drama about Stallone’s effort to sell his “Rocky” screenplay only if he could play the lead, despite being nearly broke and facing studio resistance. The film follows the making of the 1976 movie, which went on to win the 1977 best-picture Oscar, and recreates its low-budget production. The review praises Ippolito’s performance and the film’s crowd-pleasing nostalgia, while finding its portrait of Stallone overly neat and sentimental.
