Fanfic Hack Alarms Users
Archive of Our Own (AO3) went offline on October 29 after a security breach, with restoration initially estimated to take two to four weeks; the incident remains under investigation, and co-founder Naomi Novik said posted stories had not been deleted. The outage upset users and prompted some to share stories on public drives, while writers objected that their work was circulated without permission. Several copycat sites also appeared with scraped stories, some converted into AI-generated audiobooks.
