A report from the German Robert Koch Institute explains that the intense heatwave that struck Germany at the end of June, with temperatures reaching around 40°C, led to approximately 9,600 deaths within just one week (from June 22 to June 28). This raised the total heat-related fatalities to about 11,900 since the beginning of the year. These numbers are significantly higher than those recorded in previous years; for example, 2018 saw around 9,000 deaths. It also shows that extreme temperature rises particularly increase mortality among the elderly, especially those over 85 years old, who account for more than 6,000 deaths. The institute confirms that deaths tend to rise markedly when weekly average temperatures exceed 20°C.
