Lebanon-Israel talks stall on pilot zones
The Lebanese and Israeli delegations reached an agreement in the Rome negotiations to submit a request to the United Nations Security Council to adopt a new resolution ensuring the security of southern Lebanon after the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission concludes, which has been extended until the end of 2026. The plan also includes working towards a fair and safe reduction of forces by 2027. The negotiations did not reach final results regarding the experimental zones, as Lebanon insists on transitioning to new areas, while the Israeli side focuses on verifying security arrangements in previous areas before moving to the next phase. It was agreed to prepare a short list of candidates for a third party responsible for verifying the security arrangements, along with discussions on a new security agreement for the region's borders. The talks also emphasize the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel and have scheduled a new round of negotiations for September 1, with ongoing exploration of various pathways under American sponsorship.
