AI producing viruses raises disease concerns

Researchers from the "ARK" Institute in California have revealed their success in using artificial intelligence to create live bacterial viruses that do not exist in nature. They utilized a model called "Evo" to analyze millions of DNA patterns. Through filtering and designing, they produced 300 genetic constructs, including 16 viable viruses capable of infecting E. coli bacteria and reproducing within them. These viruses resemble Phi X-174, a bacteriophage that infects bacteria and poses no threat to humans. This technology shows promise for developing gene therapies and vaccines but also raises concerns about potential misuse in designing dangerous pathogens or biological weapons. The team has taken precautionary measures by not training the model on viruses that infect humans or animals. Experts emphasize that such advancements require strict regulations and oversight to ensure ethical use, especially given the increasing risks associated with AI-modified designs.
