The U.S. Department of State announced a $150 million support for the Ambasidassafa project in Madagascar, aimed at developing rare earth mineral sources and reducing dependence on Chinese control over critical mineral supply chains. The project intends to produce approximately 4,000 tons of rare earth oxides annually, including essential elements for manufacturing permanent magnets used in defense and clean energy applications, with production expected to begin by mid-2028. The United States is seeking to bolster its investments in the vital minerals sector in Africa and is exploring processing options in America and Europe, in support of greater independence and the reduction of Chinese influence in the mineral market.
