On August 5, 1969, Dubai entered a new chapter in its energy industry history with the commissioning of the Fatih Floating Oil Tank, the world's first underwater oil storage tank. Designed as a massive offshore facility with a capacity of around 500,000 barrels, it was capable of withstanding harsh sea conditions, including waves up to 20 feet high and winds at 100 miles per hour. The tank was used for storing oil before loading it onto export vessels. Built to address the storage challenges of the time, it was part of the development of the Fatih field, which began oil production in the same year. This achievement represents an extraordinary engineering milestone and reflects Dubai’s progress in the oil sector.
