Commerzbank, the German bank, announced a 94% increase in its net profits for the second quarter, reaching €898 million compared to €462 million in the same period last year. This exceeded analysts' expectations, which stood at €845 million. This rise in profits comes amid intensifying negotiations for the acquisition of the bank by Italian UniCredit, which has been ongoing for two years with a deal valued at €45 billion. Despite differing positions, Commerzbank is also facing a plan to cut 3,000 jobs to address these threats. The management is examining the future of the relationship with UniCredit amid stalled talks about the takeover, with expectations of resuming discussions soon.
